After a recent 5 day trip travelling light to Beijing, I can't wait to 'wear less clothing' on my next journey out of Shanghai. Thank you!

Re: Reclaiming the ‘Pretty Woman’ and the environment

Great read Em. There are three second hand vintage clothing stores on gulou right near my house. Andy's jumpers are testament to this :) But you are right I havent seen any clothing bins anywhere. There is a massive market where you can buy second hand clothes by the tonne that my other friends know about. A lot of the vintage stuff comes from Japan and Korea or from else where around the world. hopefully this trend is on the up!

Re: Save the Future – wear less clothing.

This is really cool, Emily. You're an inspiration! It would be interesting to hear more about second-hand clothing in China. In the whole time I lived there I only ever found one vintage clothing store - up a back alley in Kunming. I wonder what the average Beijingren does with their old clothes? I don't ever remember seeing charity bins anywhere. Hope you have a lovely refreshing break in Australia! x

Re: Save the Future – wear less clothing.

This is a great idea. It is more difficult for women I think to get away with wearing the same stuff over and over - whereas with guys, people just tend to laugh at you and then get over it. So - I applaud your efforts!

Re: Save the Future – wear less clothing.

Thanks Bonnie. You manage that, by leaving your mark on the people immediately around you first, and then through other avenues as well. It's been a pleasure and thanks so much for the shout out!

Re: CSR is not a phase – well I sure hope not anyway.

It's not so much that CSR is a phase-it's more of a stepping stone to were business innovates for sustainability. It makes for long-lasting buoyancy and reduces the use of the reed root blocks as floatation devices. Obviously in Sydney, a campaign to reduce water bottle consumption is well-targeted, but in other areas where it is harder to affect behaviour or where clean tap water isn't available, such practical and community-initiated alternatives are inspiring!
(To illustrate, I've attached a photo from Google Images, as I don't have my travel shots to hand.)

Re: My Beijing winter bike challenge

This way, you'll also be providing a good public service by helping to process the pollution in Beijing through using your own lungs as a filter. The other elephant in the room is the fact that regulation in China is extremely weak because and also barely enforced. You can't do anything in China without the government's permission, and they view anything that isn't business/making-money related as highly suspicious. And it really makes such a difference to a society when that society is not able to organise itself to achieve things for a 'higher purpose'. I know the government has done this to stamp out political dissent, but in the process they have dampened any kind of grassroots environmental or charitable/community action which I've realised is so important for any society.

Re: The eternal sunshine of a civil society

Great piece Emily!
